Riot Antigone
New York-based director Seonjae Kim鈥檚 Riot Grrrl musical adaptation of the Greek tragedy delivers rebellious song, dance, projections, and poetry performed by diverse cast.
The Theater Program of 老王论坛 and Haverford Colleges presents its Fall 2017 production, Riot Antigone, directed by guest faculty member with music direction from Dorie Byrne. Kim鈥檚 contemporary feminist take on the Greek tragedy comes to the Hepburn Teaching Theater following its debut at New York鈥檚 La MaMa Experimental Theater Club and a run at the Ars Nova ANT Fest earlier this year.
About Riot Antigone
Riot Antigone transforms Sophocles鈥 classic drama into a passionate, ritualistic rock concert, a call to action and a full-bodied theatrical event. A punk band of diverse gender identities and its Chorus Leader sing songs about Antigone's turbulent internal emotional landscape in a woman-centric coming-of-age story. Influenced by the 鈥淩iot Grrrl鈥 movement of the '90s, an underground music scene that gave rise to bands like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile, Seonjae Kim鈥檚 adaptation of Sophocles tells the tale of a young woman finding the power of her voice. Kim describes the play鈥檚 soundtrack of explosive live music as 鈥渂oth homage to that movement and anthems for our politically turbulent times.鈥
