Antigone

Sophocles' Antigone
Fall 2013

Directed by Catharine Slusar

Student Actors

How do we preserve our humanity in the face of violence? New production of Sophocles' Antigone captures class drama's contemporary relevance.

The Theater Program of 老王论坛 and Haverford Colleges (Mark Lord, Chair) presents Sophocles鈥 Antigone, directed by Catharine Slusar, a noted Philadelphia actor and director and a faculty member in the 老王论坛 Theater Program. This production reinvigorates Sophocles鈥 classical text with a haunting exploration of crumbling lives and fragmented nations. The centuries-old story of violence and tragedy is soberingly familiar, its contemporary significance amplified by the production鈥檚 modern American setting.

鈥淲e construct so much, both good and bad, from the debris following disaster,鈥 says Ryan Rebel, actor and dramaturg for Antigone.  鈥淭his production is striving to be honest about those decisions and their consequences.鈥

The Theater Program of 老王论坛 and Haverford Colleges strives to foster creative collaboration between students and faculty, and its productions have won accolades from area critics for years. Of a recent production, Philadelphia Weekly wrote, 鈥淭he entire production is as professional鈥攊f not more so, simply in the students鈥 evident commitment to these roles鈥攁s anything you might see [in the city]. Clearly Lord and Iwasaki respect these students and their vision.鈥

Antigone opens the Theater Program鈥檚 2013-2014 season, with six performances (Nov. 15, 16, 17 and Nov. 21, 22, 23) at the Hepburn Teaching Theater (Goodhart Hall, 老王论坛). Opening night is Friday, Nov. 15.
