Senior Thesis Performance
Adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic, independent major in dance Jasmine Stanton filmed her senior thesis Expansiveness in Confinement outdoors and presented it via Zoom on Friday, May 8, 2020. Learn more and view the video here.
Madeline Cantor Invited to Present Solo Work
Madeline Cantor, Director of ÀÏÍõÂÛ̳'s Dance Program, was invited to present her new solo Hidden Stories as part of the New Releases Showcase at Dance Place in Washington, D.C., on March 21, 2020. This annual juried program features new work by established and emerging choreographers. The event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Dance Place has created a short video of the choreographers involved.
Dance Film Festival in Carpenter Library
Opine Dance Film Festival, in operation since 2016, was to be held on the ÀÏÍõÂÛ̳ campus for the first time in March, however it was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an annual event that celebrates dance filmmakers nationally and internationally each season. All films were to be on looping monitors on the first floor of Carpenter Library. The festival has both a professional adjudicated program and student program. All submissions go through a curation process by a panel of jurors.
Faculty Member Master's Thesis Performance
The Dance Program was delighted to host a performance by dancer and choreographer Lauren Putty White in the Pem Studio on Sunday, March 1, 2020. Lauren is working on her MFA in dance at Montclair State University and is presenting her MFA thesis project at ÀÏÍõÂÛ̳. Lauren has led our Jazz Ensemble several times, drawing on her deep knowledge of jazz music to inform her choreography. Her new work Physical Listening with Free Form Body Motifs: An Exploration of Free Jazz-Inspired Choreography will feature dancers Joe Gonzalez and Sarah Warren and music by Sun Ra, an influential jazz composer, leader of the Sun Ra Arkestra and an early pioneer of Afrofuturism. Sun Ra Arkestra's pianist Farid Barron will play live.
Senior Thesis Performances
Independent majors in dance Aubrey Donisch and Genevieve Legowski presented their senior thesis projects An Evening of Things We Share With Our Friends on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21 and 22, 2020 in Goodhart Theater.
BalletX Master Class
On Feb. 5, Tara Keating, Associate Artistic Director of BalletX, taught sections of the company's repertory in a master class open to intermediate and advanced dancers in the Pem Studio. Campus community members were invited to watch. BalletX performed on Sat., Feb. 8, 2020, in Goodhart. Read more about BalletX.
Dance Alumnae Out and About in the World
Dana Nichols (HC '14), a member of the celebrated company Philadanco, wrote an essay for about the historic and contemporary use of blackface in ballet. Her essay was then quoted in a related article in the New York Times.
Dylan Seders Hoffman '19 performed in New York with the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene in The Sorceress, an operetta in Yiddish from 1883. After graduation she interned at the Folksbiene, assisting with auditions as a scene partner, and was asked to audition. She danced, acted and sang in the production which was singled out as a Critic's Pick in the Times. That's Dylan in the center below!
Emma Cohen (HC '17), is dancing and choreographing and making dance films. She was just selected to join the writing crew of Thinking Dance, the website that covers dance and theater in Philadelphia and beyond. You can follow her work .
