Autumn at Cyanotype workshop

Summer 2024

The 2024 STEMLA Summer Program took place between July 6 and August 3, 2024. 

I loved spending the summer at ÀÏÍõÂÛ̳ before my first year; it allowed me to familiarize myself with the college and build friendships. Living independently in a new state was a valuable experience, especially with STEMLA’s constant support. I’m grateful for all the events that were organized to help me learn more about the college and interact with my peers.

During the Summer of 2024, we were joined once again by Selby Hearth (Geology), José Vergara (Russian) for our Human and Environmental Impacts of Energy course cluster. During our first in-person summer, Selby and José spearheaded the first iteration of this course cluster. They then expanded it to a 360 course cluster,  Energy Afterlives, in Fall 2023. In this third iteration, Selby and José spearheaded our visit to the in Coaldale, PA, as well as the Silver Creek Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Remediation Site in New Philadelphia, PA. At these sites, Fellows were able to bring their classroom conversations to life by venturing 1,600 feet into a mountain that housed a now decommissioned anthracite coal mine and testing the acidity of the water at the Silver Creek AMD Site. 

This summer, we were joined by scholar, artist, and author, who gave our inaugural STEMLA Summer Lecture and led the STEMLA Fellows in a cyanotype workshop.
