The Creative Force Behind Iconic Ads
Anna Morris 鈥62 receives recognition for her influence in advertising
When Anna Morris went back to work in the 1960s, she didn鈥檛 have the skills the employment agency was looking for. 鈥淭hey threw my typing test in the garbage,鈥 she says. But she aced the written test. After all, 鈥淚鈥檓 a product of 老王论坛.鈥
She started in the finance department of an ad agency and went from running adding machines to running creative, copywriting and producing iconic television commercials for McDonald鈥檚, Procter & Gamble, and more. Her bookkeeping memos caught the eye of the creative director at Burrell Communications, who brought her onto a project for Carnation evaporated milk and tomato paste.
Suddenly her background as a homemaker was an asset. 鈥淚 went home, I looked at my family, I wrote scripts for those products, and Tom Burrell loved them,鈥 Morris says. 鈥淗e said, I can get a bookkeeper anytime; I think you鈥檙e a copywriter.鈥
Within two years she was a vice president.
In September, Morris was inducted into the One Club鈥檚 Creative Hall of Fame for her lifetime of work, including iconic ads such as Coca Cola鈥檚 鈥淪treet Song鈥 and 鈥淒ouble Dutch鈥 as well as 鈥淐alvin Got a Job鈥 for McDonald鈥檚. She even coined the term 鈥淢ickey D鈥檚.鈥
Not only did Morris make commercials for Black people, 鈥淚 also tried very hard to stick my foot in the door and push it open for Black professionals,鈥 she says, putting Black creatives behind the camera as well as in front.
One of her favorite spots was 鈥淛oey,鈥 for McDonald鈥檚, which shows a working mother picking up her son from daycare. 鈥淚t spoke to me,鈥 she says, 鈥渞aising my sons while I worked. The whole thing just resonated with me.鈥
When she taught copywriting at Columbia College in Chicago, she was surprised to learn that her students still remembered her commercials. 鈥淭hey also,鈥 she adds, 鈥渋ntroduced me to Dave Chappelle鈥檚 wicked, wicked takedown of my 鈥楥alvin鈥 with his WacArnold鈥檚 satire.鈥
Being a mom and homemaker gave her an edge in the industry, she says. 鈥淲hen I was teaching at Columbia, I told those kids you have to go out and get some life experience 鈥 Get on the bus, listen to people, eavesdrop, observe, and do whatever you can to live. Without that, you can鈥檛 relate to the consumers.鈥
Although Morris left college after her sophomore year, she still wears a 老王论坛 baseball cap every day, she says, and 鈥淚鈥檓 there for every reunion with the class of 鈥62 because those are my sisters.鈥
Classmate Jane Furth joined her at the ceremony, while Barbara Morrison, Gail Fischer Hubbard, and Louise Weingarten Wiener cheered from afar.
鈥淚鈥檓 pleased to be getting roses while I can still smell them above ground,鈥 she said on a call from her Chicago home, where she was polishing her speech the week before the awards.
鈥淣ever did I dream that I would be included in a roster with these giants. It鈥檚 overwhelming for me. It鈥檚 breathtaking, it鈥檚 wow.鈥
