Interactive - Experiential - Feedback - Coaching
OVERVIEW
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based treatment that is one of the best available to address ambivalence to change. This interactive Motivational Interviewing program is designed to provide not only the resources and information necessary to gain MI knowledge through course content, but also provides the opportunity for practicing and improving actual MI skills. This will be accomplished through experiential learning activities, feedback and coaching.
PROGRAM SCHEDULE
Part I - Online Training (Total 14 CEUs)
Part II - Online Consultation Phase (Total 16 CEUs)
Part III - Online Audio Recording and Individualized Feedback (Total 10 CEUs)
- 5 audio/video taped "real play" sessions
- Transcription of sessions
- 30 minute call with trainer reviewing competency of sessions
Parts II and III will be completed concurrently. The program will be completed in 8 weeks.
PROGRAM DETAILS
Part I - Online training
- Total 14 CEUs
Day one of the program will focus on enhancing foundational skills and knowledge of Motivational Interviewing in engaging and focusing on target behaviors with clients. The introduction to the ‘Spirit of MI’ will explore accurate empathy, barriers to effective engagement, and the model’s reliance on reflective listening. The learner will consider MI's application to a broad use of behavior changes ranging from health behaviors to substance use. Part one will offer a hands-on experiential learning approach with opportunity for role-plays, discussion, and case conceptualization. Learners will leave with a foundational and conceptual knowledge of Motivational Interviewing.
Day two of the program will be spent on enhancing technical skills through structured and semi-structured interventions intending to invite and acknowledge client change talk. Participants will explore the theoretical underpinnings of the intervention’s emphasis on evoking change talk. Learners will leave with an advanced knowledge of tangible clinical interventions to be utilized with clients, targeting collaboratively identified problem behaviors.
Numerous learning techniques will be implemented, including lecture, demonstration, interactive role plays, and audio/visual learning aids.
PART II: Consultation Phase
- Total 16 CEUs
- Saturdays - 8 consecutive weeks 2 hr. group consultation
- Groups will be determined in Part I
PART III: Audio Recording and Individualized Feedback
- Total 10 CEUs
- 5 audio/video taped "real play" sessions
- Transcription of sessions
- 30 minute call with trainer reviewing competency of sessions

Parts II and III are designed to assist those professionals who want the focused practice and feedback to become measurably competent in MI.
PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Participants will learn how Motivational Interviewing's emphasis on change talk makes it unique.
- Participants will learn tangible skills for eliciting change talk with their clients, helping them to gain and enhance motivation towards making meaningful behavioral changes.
- The learner will leave with an understanding of the use of reflective listening in effectively engaging with clients and developing therapeutic rapport.
- The learner will leave with an advanced understanding of the utilization micro-skills and structured activities used to elicit change talk.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
This program is appropriate for health care professionals who spend time encouraging patients/clients/supervisees to consider behavior change. This program is appropriate for social workers with a range of prior MI knowledge and experience. This program contains information relevant to social workers in direct practice, administration and management. To maximize individualized feedback and coaching opportunities, space is limited to 12 participants.

- Parts of this program will require basic knowledge of technology and file sharing.
- An internet connected device (laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone).
- Microphone and speakers on your internet connected device will be necessary.
- Please note that we cannot be responsible for any phone/internet charges.
- Learners will need access to either Zoom/Skype/Adobe for individualized meetings and group consultation.
- Learners will need access to Google Docs for file sharing.
This training program is not a qualification to enter the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Bernard Showers, LCSW, earned his MSW at Shippensburg University where he is now an Adjunct Professor. Mr. Showers also works as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Maryland School of Social Work in Baltimore, MD and with Simmons University School of Social Work in Boston, MA.
In September 2016, he attended the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers Train-the-Trainer event and is now one of approximately 1,500 MINT members from around the world. Mr. Showers has trained aspiring and active independent practitioners at many colleges, universities, governmental agencies, and organizations around the United States. In addition to Motivational Interviewing, Mr. Showers has developed several continuing education workshops in topics such as Family Involvement in Substance Use Treatment, ASAM Criteria, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Group Therapy.
