Why did I go back to American Express?
I can summarize my reasons for returning as a finance intern into three categories: the people, the culture, and the growth opportunities. The company has a good working environment that fosters professional development through a wide range of support systems, from workshops to mentorship. In addition, it is truly a diverse space that is inclusive and encompasses all spectrums of diversity. Finally, the company has a good work-life balance achieved through several work and after-work activities to strengthen teamwork.
Describe what you were doing at the internship
I was working in the strategy and analytics group within Global Merchant and Network services group analyzing various payment transaction types. I focused my time on looking at how digital wallet and contactless payment types have been growing by region and industries.
I took part in several other events such as listening to speaker series, leadership labs, setting up networking coffee chats, joining group calls with other interns, virtual happy hours, team games, and even volunteering. These events made my six weeks pass by quickly and reduced the monotony of each day. Finally, I always prepared myself mentally by dressing for work.
How did COVID-19 impact your summer experience?
Although my internship got shortened to six weeks, all the teams at American Express worked tirelessly to ensure that we had a good and productive experience this summer. Self-discipline and communication were the two fundamental skills that I found most crucial in maintaining a successful remote work experience. I finished my study abroad semester at home, which helped me strengthen my self-discipline skills and ability to work independently. I strengthened communication with my team through having introductory coffee chats and scheduling recurring meetings. My manager played a big role in making my experience smooth through daily WebEx calls, Skype, and email to keep each other updated.
What are your key takeaways from two summers at American Express?
I have learned that communication is extremely important in having a fulfilling experience. It also means getting out of my comfort zone to network and learn other people鈥檚 preferred communication styles. Additionally, I have learned to be open-minded and flexible in my work. For example, throughout my internships, I have frequently had to adjust my approach to projects in order to adapt to new challenges.
