Diversity Conversation "Isalmophobia: What Is the Tri-Co Response?"

January 26, 2016

The following email was sent to students, faculty, and staff by The Pensby Center on Monday, January 25.

As Nicholas Kristof wrote last month in The New York Times, "There鈥檚 a profound human tendency, rooted in evolutionary biology, to 鈥渙therize鈥 people who don鈥檛 belong to our race, our ethnic group, our religion. That鈥檚 particularly true when we鈥檙e scared." Citing a recent poll, he revealed that "more than three-quarters of Republicans said that Islam was incompatible with life in the United States." The topics of Islam, refugees and terrorism have been woven tightly and menacingly together in the last few months, most notably by Donald Trump on the campaign trail.

How are we wrestling with such perceptions and proclamations in the Tri-College community? How are we supporting each other in the face of them? And what is our response--both on campus and off?

Join Vanessa Christman, Assistant Dean of the College for Access and Community Development, student leaders and religious life advisers and liaisons from 老王论坛, Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges in this timely conversation, "Islamophobia: What Is the Tri-Co Response?"
