Argentina

  • Language: Instruction is in Spanish.
  • Fields of study: Anthropology, Archaeology, Economics, Film Studies, Gender and Sexuality, History, International Studies, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. 
  • Housing and Meals: Students live and eat with Argentine families.
  • Registering for Courses: Credit value of each course is three or four. Students will enroll in five courses, or 15-16 credits. Students may not opt for any other form of registration without prior approval from the Bryn Mawr Study Abroad Office and the Registrar.
  • Eligibility: GPA 2.5
  • Dates: Fall Semester: mid-July to mid-December (Argentine Semester II); Spring Semester: February to July (Argentina Semester I).

  • Eligibility: GPA 2.75
  • Dates: Fall Semester: July to November (Costa Rican Semester II); Spring Semester (Costa Rican Semester I): January to June

Cuba

  • Language: Instruction is in Spanish. 
  • Fields of study: Spanish, Cuban Studies, Humanities, Social Sciences, some Sciences, Economics, Political Science, History, and Film Studies. 
  • Housing and Meals: Housing is in a home-style residence, double and triple rooms. Housing is about a 30-minute walk to the university. Two meals are provided at the residence, breakfast and dinner. Students purchase lunch on campus or may prepare food in the residence.
  • Registering for Courses: Students are registered for advanced Spanish subject, Cuban studies subject, then enroll in three subjects from the University of Havana. Students may not opt for any other form of registration without prior approval from the Bryn Mawr Study Abroad Office and the Registrar.
  • Eligibility: 3.0
  • Dates: late August - mid-December, late January – late May.

Ecuador

  • Language: Instruction is in Spanish.
  • Fields of study: Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Economics, Environmental Studies, Literature, Politics, Sociology, and Spanish. 
  • Housing and Meals: Students live with Ecuadorian families. Meals are provided by host families.
  • Registering for Courses: Credit value of each course is 3-4 credits. Students will enroll in 5 courses, or 15-16 credits. Students may not opt for any other form of registration without prior approval from the Bryn Mawr Study Abroad Office and the Registrar.
  • Eligibility: GPA 2.75
  • Dates: Fall Semester: Early/Mid-August to mid/late December; Spring semester: Early January to mid-May. Also, please note that students taking classes at partner universities may have to remain later to sit for exams.

Peru

  • Language: Instruction is in Spanish.
  • Fields of study: Spanish, Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, Political Science, and Communications. 
  • Housing and Meals: Students live and have most meals in a family homestay arranged by IFSA Butler.
  • Registering for Courses: Students enroll in three classes offered at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú from the variety of departments offered.​ Students may not opt for any other form of registration without prior approval from the Bryn Mawr Study Abroad Office and the Registrar.
  • Eligibility: GPA 2.5
  • Dates: Semester 1 (March to mid-July), Semester 2 (August to mid-December).

United States (Domestic Exchange)

  • Language: Instruction is in English.
  • Fields of Study: Exchange students are eligible to enroll in any course offered by Spelman. There are approximately 26 majors at Spelman. In the event that a student is interested in a two-semester course, the student will need special permission from the instructor to enroll. 
  • Housing and Meals: Spelman exchange students are required to live on campus, which includes a meal plan. They are typically housed in three residence halls. Exchange students are not permitted to reside in the Suites.
  • Registering for Courses: Students may not opt for any other form of registration without prior approval from the Bryn Mawr Study Abroad Office and the Registrar. 
  • Eligibility: By Nomination. GPA 3.0.
  • Nomination Procedure: All submitted nominations are final, and cannot be reversed. Students who are approved and nominated by the Study Abroad Committee to study on the Spelman College Domestic Exchange are accepting a place on the program and must make a commitment to attend, provided that they are accepted by the institution. The Dean’s Office will forward the names of all nominated students to Spelman College. In addition, students will receive application instructions from the Dean’s Office to complete the Spelman College application online.
  • Dates: The fall term is from August-December; the spring term is from January -May.
  • Note: This is an early-application program.

Ready to Apply?

Applying to study abroad is a two-step process during your sophomore year.  First, you must apply for BMC approval to study abroad by the required deadline.  Next, when you have received approval through BMC, you must apply for admission to the program of your choice.
