Manzoni at ÀÏÍõÂÛ̳. A Student Re-Writing of I Promessi Sposi (1825)
Students from Roberta Ricci's seminar will present a rewriting of the classic Italian novel "I promessi sposi," translated into English as "The Betrothed," published in 1825-26. Set in early 17th-century Lombardy during the period of the Thirty Years' War and the plague, the novel deals with classism, cowardice, social justice, resistance, regionalism, language, otherness, and marginalization. The novel brought Manzoni immediate acclaim and had enormous appeal for the nationalistic Risorgimento period. It became a model for many later Italian writers.
