About the Lecture: AI became an increasing topic of public conversation and concern in November 2022 with the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Yet since long before then, AI has been impacting people’s lives in consequential ways from education to criminal justice to employment. How can these powerful tools be used effectively advancing science and efficiency while protecting people from harm? Building on lessons learned in working on the White House AI Bill of Rights, the talk will include insights on one possible path forward.
About the Speaker: Sorelle Friedler is the Shibulal Family Professor of Computer Science at Haverford College. She served as the Assistant Director for Data and Democracy in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy under the Biden-Harris Administration where her work included the AI Bill of Rights. Her research focuses on the fairness and interpretability of machine learning algorithms, with applications from criminal justice to materials discovery. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, College Park.
