Shannon Steiner (Ph.D. Candidate, HART) Accepts Prestigious Fellowship in Art History at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
Shannon Steiner (Ph.D. Candidate, History of Art) has accepted the Hanns Swarzenski and Brigitte Horney Swarzenski Fellowship in Art History for research at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The fellowship is for a one year term. At the Met, Shannon will continue her ongoing research into Byzantine cloisonn茅 enamel objects. There she will undertake a close examination of the Met's collection of Byzantine enamel objects with an eye towards uncovering the meaning of enamel as an alchemical technology in Byzantine devotion and court life. Shannon's dissertation 鈥淏yzantine Enamel and the Aesthetics of Technological Power, Ninth to Twelfth Centuries鈥 is a look into Byzantine enameling practice as an alchemical technology that reflected the Byzantine Empire's knowledge and command of the natural world.
Over the years Shannon has received fellowships from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation for study at the Zentralinstitut f眉r Kunstgeschichte (Central Institute for Art History) in Munich, Germany as well as a nine-month Dumbarton Oaks Junior Fellowship in Byzantine Studies.
